Today, the opening game of the Divisional Round will see the Indianapolis Colts travel to Arrowhead Stadium to play the red-hot Kansas City Chiefs. The Colts are entering this game off a surprise upset over the 3 seed Houston Texans and are looking to spoil the AFC’s top seeded Chiefs. The Chiefs will be looking to put their historically bad playoff woes behind them and move one step closer to making it back to a Super Bowl for the first time since Super Bowl 4.

Indianapolis Colts: The Indianapolis Colts entered the playoffs off an elimination game at the end of the regular season. Whoever won between them and the Titans would go into the playoffs as the 6 seed and face the Texans. The Colts won this game and then proceeded to shock many when they defeated their divisional rivals, the Houston Texans, in a one-sided affair 21-7. The Colts victory over the Texans was a complete victory on both sides of the ball. Offensively, they were able to score three touchdowns on one of the best defenses in the NFL. Defensively, the Colts rose to the occasion and shut out the Texans for three quarters before they were finally able to score one touchdown in the fourth quarter. For the Colts to be able to beat the Chiefs their defense will have to play beyond amazing. The Colts can win this game if they can manage to slow down this Chiefs offense for just a few possessions. You know this offense is going to score, it is just a case of trying your best to limit them from scoring to a point that you cannot catch up. The Chiefs defense this season is the second worst in the league, so this Colts’ offense should not have much trouble finding the end zone this weekend. All four of the Chiefs losses this season have been within 7 points, so within a touchdown. All four losses have also been games where both teams have scored at least four touchdowns in the game. This game will be high scoring, and it is imperative for the Colts to keep up with this prolific Chiefs’ offense if they have any hope of making it to the conference championship next weekend.

Kansas City Chiefs: The Kansas City Chiefs are entering this game with a first round bye after securing the 1 seed in the AFC with a 12-4 record. The Chiefs have the best offense in the NFL and are averaging 35.3 points a game this year. Their offense is being led by first year starter Patrick Mahomes, who is the leading candidate to be named NFL MVP (Most Valuable Player) this season. Patrick Mahomes became just the third player in NFL history to throw for 50+ touchdowns in a season. This Chiefs offense has been unstoppable this season, but the defense has been horrible. The Chiefs defense is just not good enough for the Offense to put the game away early. To win this game the Chiefs will have to play how they have this entire season; scoring a lot of points and eventually overwhelming their opponent. This Chiefs team has also not played very impressively against teams that made the postseason this year. All four of their losses have been to teams that made the playoffs and overall, they are 2-4 against teams that made the playoffs. Another issue that the Chiefs enter this game with is their incredible history of being bad in the postseason. They hold an all-time record of 9-18 in the postseason. Fourteen of those losses have come from their first game in the playoffs, so they are a frequent one and done team in the playoffs. The Chiefs are hoping that their quarterback for the foreseeable future, Patrick Mahomes, will be able to push them past their historical woes and lead them into a more dominant era.
Final Verdict:
Ryan Baucum: The Chiefs should win this one. Their offense has been fantastic this season and while the Colts defense has been good this season, they are not good enough to keep this offense from scoring at will on them. Final score prediction: 38-24
Josh Alvarez: I believe the Chiefs will take this one because their high powered offense will be too much for this colts defense. 35-28
Chase Trent: I love Andrew Luck, its so hard not to. However, to make my Super Bowl wish come true, the Chiefs have to pull through this week, 31-23
